A type of underwear fundamentally similar to a thong.

The back is usually a narrow strip running down the buttocks and underneath. The sides are thin strings or straps. The front is usually very skimpy with just enough material to cover the genitalia. If the back is a little wider than a strip it is not considered a true g-string, but if the sides are strings/straps and the front is skimpy with minimal coverage, the tag can still be applied since those elements still capture the essence of the thong style.
