giongo

Meaning words that mimic sounds, it is a type of symbolic word used in the Japanese language to represent sounds. There is a subset of giongo known as giseigo. These words are used frequently along side gitaigo.

Examples:

ガチャン / がちゃn / gachan / the sound of something being locked

ジャブジャブ / じゃぶじゃぶ / jabujabu / the sound of splashing water

チャラ / ちゃら / chara / the sound of a ding or jingle

ベベ / べべ / bebe / the sound of sputtering like a small engine

ボッ / ぼ / bo / the sound of a light impact or a fire suddenly catching

モシャ / もしゃ / mosha / the sound of chewing something with a light crunch
