Lent is the solemn Christian religious observance in the liturgical year before Easter. Commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, Lent is a period of repentance when many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up certain luxuries in imitation of Jesus Christ's sacrifice during his fast, an act known as one's Lenten sacrifice. Typically, fish is the only meat allowed to be eaten. Along with fasting, prayer and almsgiving (the three pillars of Lent) are also observed.
The actual timing of Lent varies according to denomination, depending on how the date of Easter is calculated, the calendar a particular Church uses, and which particular days Lent begins and ends on as well as includes (some include Sundays while others do not).
