Unaware prey usually describes a character who is about to be eaten by another, and is unaware of their fate. Often the prey is snuck up upon on by the predator from behind, or is the predator is about to "attack" from above. The prey may be asleep, intoxicated, distracted, or have their eyes closed while interacting with the prey, who is about to eat them.

In some more comedic cases, an unaware prey character may be so unaware that they walk right into the predator's mouth (or other orifice). In rare situations, the character may be completely unaware even after being ingested alive.
