Prescription lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) is a chemical compound commonly used as a prescription drug for depression, mood disorders, mania, and psychosis. It is notoriously volatile in its reactions with other medications, and is classified as a controlled substance.

Side effects of long-term lithium use include, but are not limited to:

  • Heightened anxiety;
  • Increased risk of overdosing on alcohol, and/or heightened alcohol intoxication, if consuming any form of alcoholic beverage while on lithium;
  • Risk of unsafe blood-serum lithium levels if taking Ibuprofen or any NSAID while on lithium;
  • Renal diabetes insipidus;
  • Lithium intoxication, impacts the central nervous system and kidneys.
