consolation
The act of trying to alleviate an upset individual's discomfort, sadness, or offense. Distinct from comforting in that comforting is more of a (usually physical) demonstration of care and concern with the intent of making one feel safe and loved, consolation is more of an apology, reassurance, or attempt at alleviating the negative feelings caused by a single source.
