"MordeTwi" is a portmanteau name for a crossover relationship between Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and Mordecai from Regular Show. MordeTwi started off as a friendship in a multi fandom crossover fanfiction titled "Earthworm Zim" back in June, 2011, with notable appearances of the two being in the latter portion of Chp. 14, part 1, Chp. 14, part 2, and Chp. 15. The fanfiction inspired fans to create shipping content for the two, including various independent fanfiction series – a notable example being Friendship, Disharmony and Sonic, and fan art – sometimes depicting various random scenes. This eventually led to the creation of the MordeTwi fan group on October 24, 2011, for the need to accumulate many fan creations for the ship, and the ownership of the group was handed over to Cartuneslover16 – the author of "Earthworm Zim" – some time later.
The course of history was changed forever when, just 9 months after the group's creation, something completely random and unexpected was published...

Airplanes Meme/"Redraw MordeTwi" Trend

On August 6, 2012, several months after the founding of the group, bluedog444 posted an image titled "(MordeTwi) Airplanes" – which featured lyrics from the 2010 B.o.B song "Airplanes". Since then, "MordeTwi" has become mostly known as the "Airplanes/Shooting Stars" meme due to a trend of redrawing bluedog444's art which began as far back as 2013. "MordeTwi" became a meme, easily dismissed as a "crack ship" (a relationship that is particularly odd) that is purely for the lolz; the time when it was a genuine "rarepair"* has since been forgotten. Most recent art works featuring this ship, therefore, are memes involving satirical artwork, poking fun at the subjective absurdity of the idea of these disparate characters being romantically involved – all steming from this tradition of depicting the relationship in a melodramatic light for comedic effect, remaking the original "Airplanes" art from 2012. The "Redraw MordeTwi" meme trend grew stronger into virality in 2020 on Twitter, and reemerged around a year later as a TikTok hashtag and as a fully transformed trend with various re-inventions of MordeTwi.
