A machine for inflicting execution by decapitation, introduced to France in 1792. The device consists of two upright posts supporting a crossbeam - a heavy weighted blade is suspended from the crossbeam by a rope. The posts are grooved to guide the blade as it falls onto (and slices through) the neck of an immobilized victim.
