Character: piers (pokémon)
Piers is a human character who first appeared in Pokémon Sword and Shield. He is a Gym Leader who specialises in Dark-type Pokémon. Although there are many Dark-type specialists in the games, he is the first Dark-type specialist who is a Gym Leader.
Piers is the only Gym Leader absent from the Gym Challenge's opening ceremony in Motostoke. He is also the only Gym Leader in Sword and Shield who does not Dynamax his Pokémon, as his gym is the only one not built onto a Power Spot, and he personally dislikes Dynamaxing anyway and thus does not own a Dynamax band. During his battle, he will call out his strategies, such as revealing that his Scrafty has Intimidate, its hidden ability.
The story reveals that Piers created Team Yell, who are actually just his gym trainers, in order to cheer on his little sister Marnie; this means he is the de-facto leader of Team Yell. After he is defeated in battle, he decides to retire in order to focus on his music career. He wants his position to go to Marnie, but she initially refuses while aiming to get through the championship cup.
During the post-game, he assists the player in defeating the rampaging Dynamax Pokémon and will return to Spikemuth (though not as the Gym Leader; Marnie finally takes that role) after the player captures Zacian (in Sword) or Zamazenta (in Shield).
