Species: ragdoll cat
The Ragdoll is a breed of domestic cat whose name is derived from the tendency of individuals from the original breeding stock to go limp and relaxed when picked up.
Ragdolls are one of the largest breeds of cat. All pure-breed ragdolls also have blue eyes in varying shades.
The ragdoll breed was created in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker. She set up her own registry, the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) in 1971, and registered a trademark on the "Ragdoll" name in 1975, which lasted until 2005 when it was not renewed. A group of breeders split off from the IRCA (owing to its increasingly strict breeding regulations) and created a variant on the ragdoll, known as the Ragamuffin, which became an established separate breed in 1994.
