Species: heteromyid

A small rodent family containing three subfamilies: Dipodomyinae (kangaroo rats and kangaroo mice, Heteromyinae (spiny pocket mice), and Perognathinae (pocket mice, not to be confused with spiny pocket mice). These rodents are endemic to grasslands and deserts of the New World, mostly in western North America, though some species have been found as far south as northern South America. They are known for their hopping bipedal locomotion. Although superficially similar, they are unrelated to murid rodents (such as mice or rats) or dipodid rodents (such as jerboas).
