A sounding rod is a rod, usually made of either stainless steel or silicone rubber, that is intended for urethral stimulation. They can be rigid to stimulate only along the shaft, or flexible if the intent is to move deeper for prostate penetration or bladder penetration. They are a common add-on on chastity cages, where they are usually hollow to let cum and urine flow through.

The name is unrelated to noise, and instead comes from French "sonde urinaire" (lit. "urinary probe"), which is a term for urethral catheters.

In gynecology and urology, there are also special types of rods with characteristic shapes used in various circumstances. Among the common ones are:

  • Rosebud dilator (thin straight rod with a bullet at the end)
  • Van Buren dilator (thick rod that curves upwards towards the end)
  • Hegar dilator (thick rod with slight S-shape)
  • Guyon dilator (thick rod that curves down and then back up into somewhat of a hook shape)
  • Brooks dillator (thin rod with two right angle bends and a bullet at the end)
  • Amplatz dilator (tube going down the urethra to the bladder that allows other instruments to easily move through for more complex operations, usually targeting the kidneys)
