fly agaric

Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita, from the Amanitaceae family and genus Amanita, is a species of mushroom.

It is arguably one of the most iconic toadstool species, being hugely recognizable and often portrayed in popular culture such as in media focused around forested areas. The mushroom is large with white gills and white spots, and the main fruited body is mostly red.

Due to its common usage in popular media and folklore, it is often associated with gnomes or gnome-like beings such as smurfs as well as fairies. Fly agarics have also been portrayed in video games, inspiring the super mushroom from the Mario Brothers series.
