
Species: hesperocyonine
The most basal canids (not canines), thus it is the common ancestor for the entire canid family. This subfamily first appeared during the late Eocene epoch and lasted through the middle Miocene, giving rise to the borophaginae and caninae subfamilies. The hesperocyon was the first true canid to evolve after the caniform-feliform split 42 million years ago.
