autotomy
The ability to either through moderate force or willingly shed an appendage as a means of self-defense to escape when caught. This doesn't include extreme force or if it's severed in surgery or through cutting injury. Autotomy may be followed by full or partial regeneration.
Commonly seen in real life in vertebrates like the tail of some reptiles and amphibians but also in several invertebrates.
