Blouse describes a range of loose fitting topwear, generally worn by women in modern "professional" settings as a form of casual businesswear. The most common meaning of "blouse" is essentially a women's dress shirt, however, a blouse can take many forms: some have a deeper/wider neckline than a traditional unisex dress shirt and is typically worn untucked; a blouse may sometimes lack a collar and buttons entirely, and some more casual blouses may bare the wearer's shoulders, and/or feature baggy sleeves that bunch up at the shoulders, elbow or wrists, depending on the length of the sleeves.
Historically, a blouse was a shirt worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women, and children prior to the 20th century. It is typically gathered at the waist or hips so that it hangs loosely ("blouses") over the wearer's body.
