Legendary birds is a collective term used to refer to the legendary trio of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. They are also known as the winged mirages.

Being the first Legendary trio, they set the standards for future trios; they all share similar attributes and—in the case of most of the future trios—are considered equal among themselves. Like other trios later would, the Legendary birds share a master in Lugia, as well as two common traits: their flying-type and their abilities.

They are all based on various legendary birds in mythology: Articuno is based upon the arctic-associated roc and/or simurgh, Zapdos is based upon the electricity-associated thunder bird, and Moltres is based upon the fire-associated phoenix and/or various firebirds.
