"Legendary trio" is a popular, fanmade term in the Pokémon fandom meant to refer to the main series' regions' Legendary Pokémon, specifically a connected "trio". Each region has at least one, and these trios are connected together in origin and design. Two members of the trio are often game version exclusive and often are the version's "mascot", playing important roles in the plot and appearing on the game's box art. The third member often is made into a version mascot later on in a "sister" expansion game, with expanded upon lore. Some trios have a "trio master" who often oversee and lead them. Some trio masters aren't a member of the trio itself but are an outside creature instead.

Some legendary trios often start out as legendary duos before the eventual third member is revealed. However, despite being connected as a trio, legendary duos turned into trios often have closer dynamics/relationships together than with their third member.
