lance (weapon)

A lance is a long weapon for use by a horse-riding warrior, typically a polearm similar to a spear but longer. It may also have a large metal end that tapers to a sharp point. They are designed for use by cavalry. Unlike spears, they are not intended to be thrown. Their effectiveness while dismounted led to the use of pikes in formations in Europe.

If you see what looks like a spear being carried by a rider, chances are it's actually a lance.
