mantle (mollusk)

The mantle is a part of the anatomy of mollusks. It is the outer body wall which covers the internal flesh of the mollusc, and often also can have protruding frills. It is most commonly seen in cephalopods, where it is often the most noticeable, and is often perceived by the average viewer as the "head" or "skull" of the creature. In some mollusks (usually gastropods), the skin on the mantle secretes calcium carbonate and conchiolin, and creates a shell, however for simplification's sake these are just tagged as shell.
