Suikawari (スイカ割り), watermelon splitting, is a traditional Japanese pastime game played during the summer and often at beaches or public events. Very similar to games involving piñata, a watermelon is placed down and players are are handed an object, usually a practice sword, to smash it while blindfolded and spun around. Rather than obtaining candy, the contents of the watermelon are simply shared among the participants. In Japanese media, it is often used to give a leisurely, summerly, and relaxing atmosphere.
