railway crossing

A railway crossing (also known more formally as level crossing, and also called a grade crossing, or railroad crossing), is an intersection where a railway line crosses a roadway or path at the same level.

Railway crossings almost uniformly feature some form of signage indicating the crossing, most often some variation of an x-shaped "Crossbuck" sign - the appearance of which varies by country, but is generally red and white (or yellow) or bears "railway (railroad) crossing" (or the local translation). Some crossings feature additional safety/warning elements like flashing lights, a chiming bell, and an automated gate that blocks the road, which activate when a train is within a certain proximity of the crossing.
