submarine sandwich
A submarine sandwich or "sub" is a type of sandwich where a length of bread, or a roll, is split in half and filled with meats, cheeses, vegetables and condiments.
The name comes from the sandwich's resemblance to a submarine. Submarine sandwich is the most widespread name for this type of sandwich globally, but has over a dozen regional names within the United States alone.
