When a character has a noticeably long and flexible body, as snakes do. Despite the name, this applies not only to feral snakes, nagas and lamias, but also to anything else with a similarly long body, like eastern dragons, eels, millipedes, etc. The character can have limbs as long as the body shape is serpentine.

As a rule of thumb, serpentine characters are usually long and flexible enough to be capable of coiling around things.

Tag only if the body is visible. For example, a headshot portrait of a snake should not be tagged as serpentine.
