The Thompson submachine gun, sometimes informally called a "Tommy Gun", is a submachine gun made infamous by the gangsters of the 1920s and 1930s (but used by soldiers, civilians, law enforcement and criminals alike), it is easily identified by its drum magazine and dual grips. It is among the most well known firearms in pop culture, and popular among collectors.

The Thompson was also known informally as the "Chicago Typewriter", "The Chopper", and "Trench Sweeper".
