A pentacle originally described a pentagram surrounded by a circular outline. The definition has evolved to refer to any type of insignia surrounded by a circular outline. It may not always be a pentagram, but this tag will be mostly of the pentagram variety.
Extra information
The pentacle is an ancient symbol of a five pointed star (pentagram) within a circle. In Chinese and Japanese religions the points represent the four elements (fire, water, earth, and air) and ether (spirit) and the circle represents eternity. In Christianity, the five points represent the five wounds of Jesus, and the symbol was used as the city seal of Jerusalem. Inverted pentacle has been used by satanists and neo-pagans to represent materialism, the opposite of spiritualism.
Nowadays, it is commonly associated with occultism and satanism.
