The cheetah is the second largest member of the feline subfamily. From around 80cm at the withers for an average weight of 50kg, the cheetah is the fastest land mammal,
capable of making peaks up to 110km / h. Today there is only one species of cheetah left, but it is still separated into four subspecies that populate Africa and a small
part of the Middle East. In Africa, three subspecies are present, first of all the southern cheetah, the most common, which has marked and broad stripes on both sides of
the nose and a creamy belly. This subspecies has many variations of patterns, such as the king cheetah or the very rare spotless cheetah. The second African subspecies,
the Northeast Cheetah, has a darker coat and a white belly, with thinner markings around the nose. A rare variation of colors is represented, the isabelline cheetah,
or cream, which is sometimes seen in cheetah populations of the Northeast. The last African subspecies is the Saharan cheetah, this critically endangered population is
characterized by a very light and very short coat, adaptations to the life in the hot arid zones. Finally, the last cheetah population only lives in a small area of Iran.
Known as the Asiatic Cheetah, this subspecies is characterized by a long coat on the belly, shoulders and tail. Critically endangered, this cheetah is the rarest of all,
indeed there would remain only fifty individuals in the wild.
Northeast African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii)with variation isabelline.
Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus)
Southern African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) with variation king and spotless.
