Topic: would this vid count as a screencap?

Posted under General

i have been thinking about uploading this video but on second thoughts am not sure whether it would count as a 'screencap' or not
- https://tv.sohu.com/v/dXMvMjgxMzc3MzU1LzgyNzIzNzkwLnNodG1s.html

i have the video saved on my computer, but it's an MP4 file and would need to be converted to WEBM to be compatible with E621

from what i read, changing the format of the file could also be against the uploading guidelines - but am not sure about that

on the whole am finding the whole thing kinda confusing lol

to any members of staff, what's your take on this?

e621 allows mp4s now

Only if they're av1 encoded, mp4 with h.264/265 still aren't allowed.

would converting the file enable it to be uploaded?

for example by converting to WEBM?

or would that not be allowed?

The screen capture (screencap) rule mainly applies to screenshots or videos where a third-party is playing a game like VRChat, Second Life, Skyrim, etc. and sharing it here. This also includes still images, game sprites, or clips of animations taken from a game or a movie.
We generally do not allow that, unless it is an official clip made by a game developer to showcase their game.

Artist animations posted on video sharing sites like Youtube or Sohu TV are still fine, so the above video can be posted without any problems.

We do allow posting converted videos, if done right.

I don't recommend using online converters, but instead programs like FFMPEG or Avidemux.

Updated

Converting to webm is not hard. There are plenty of free tools to do it.

If the file is in acceptable format, upload as is.
If the file is in format that's not accepted, e.g. PDF, WebP, AVI, h264 MP4, etc. etc. then conversion to fileformat that's acceptable and that doesn't alter quality at all or too much, is necessary.
With images, this usually means PNG, but animations are bit harder and a lot of times truly lossless conversion like APNG would turn out way too large and wouldn't have audio, so VP9 WebM or AV1 MP4 with visually lossless conversion settings suffice.

However in this instance, I would be more worried about sources quality in general, that is extremely low res video that has highly visible compression artifacts. This would not meet uploading guidelines quality requirements even as is.

hey there Mairo and thanks for the reply :)

so it sounds like the image quality could be the biggest issue here

i know that E621 is quite strict when it comes to image quality

but is there any room for making exceptions, for example in this case?

There really isn't, at least very little. The quality is far too low in this case. Even purposeful things that look like quality issues (for instance, a jpg that purposefully has extremely low compression quality) generally aren't allowed.

that's a pity lol, because there are many who can enjoy the content of a vid or pic even if the quality is not perfect

and being too strict about image quality would deprive those ppl of something they would like, quality issues aside

maybe it is possible to use AI to remove the artifacts etc, but i don't know if this would violate E621's rules on AI

and even if it is possible and allowed, i wouldn't even know how to do it lol

still tho, rules are rules - thx to everyone who replied :)

That's a bad idea, anything of that sort will still fall under Low quality submissions.

Your best bet is to try and find the original source of the animation (if the one linked is a repost) or to ask the artist for a better quality version (provided you can find them).

i just checked, and i actually do have a better version than the one you see on the website

i don't notice any obvious artifacts but i can't guarantee that it would be satisfactory for E621

---
so here is a slightly unorthodox idea lol, probably not allowed but plz hear me out

would it be okay if i upload the better version i have on my comp, so the staff can decide whether it's good enough or not?

if they like it then they could let it stay, but if not then they could just remove it for not being good enough

i understand this would probably be against the rules tho, so i definitely won't do anything without permission

thx again for reading, and plz tell me what u think :)

You still have to source where you had gotten this supposed "better version".

If it turns out that this "better version" was just a disguised AI-edited or upscaled video, it would be deleted and you risk getting slapped for Posting Abuse.

Though, please don't take my comment as an accusation, I meant it as a fair bit of warning for those who have had this idea in their minds.

If you want a janitor or mod to comment on the viability of your upload, you may post it temporarily on another site first (such as Google Drive or Discord) so that they may view it without it being directly posted here.

thanks for the warning :)

i no longer have the source for where i got the better quality video

it was linked to me by a friend of mine called Reizinho on InkBunny, who has drawn some nsfw fanart featuring this same character
- https://e621.net/posts?tags=reizinho

however the link he posted was about a year ago, and as far as i know this link is no longer valid

i have uploaded it to Discord already tho, and i could post a link to the file here on E621 if i remember to do so

thanks again :)

if you have a good faith(not artificially improved) higher quality version of an existing post, i believe you can dm an admin here to give you replacement privileges as that is the preferred method of uploading better versions

That's true when replacing an already uploaded post; it's a bit hard to trace with the flow of conversation, but I believe this is checking the validity of a potential post before uploading.

If that link was from an official source (not just a random repost), you can even add that as one of the sources for the upload by including a - in the front to signify that it is a "dead source".
E.g., -https://tv.sohu.com/v/dXMvMjgxMzc3MzU1LzgyNzIzNzkwLnNodG1s.html if the link in your first comment had became invalid.

This actually helps people to track old and long-deleted posts through an archive (like the Wayback Machine) if it had been saved there.

Since you are already on Discord, you can try our e621 Discord helpdesk to get a faster response from a janitor or staff regarding the viability of our upload.
Otherwise, you can post it here and wait for @Mairo to respond.

i don't think the link he gave me was an official link

it was more like a file hosting service, maybe even his Discord which is now defunct

i could ask him about it tho :)

---
i am very new to Discord and am still quite illiterate lol, but i see what i can do :)

one thing i need to explain tho, is that am currently using E621 on my old computer and Discord on my new one

this is a VERY old computer and my browser is 6 years out of date due to no more updates being issued for my OS

because my browser is out of date, i can't use Discord on this computer because of compatibility issues

i would have to log into the other computer to use Discord, which i intend to do sometime soon hopefully

---
however before i do anything, i have an important question about E621 :)

would i be able to log into E621 on my new computer while also logged in on my old one?

or would E621 mistakenly think my account is being hacked and lock my account?

i would like to log in on my new comp, but i don't wanna accidentally freeze my E6 account lol
