Topic: Can cropped versions of art be posted?

Posted under General

I was just wondering if it would be ok to post a cropped version of an image, for instance if part of the original is unappealing/unwanted. I know that sounds strange, but I'll link the post I mean here: https://e621.net/posts/5705332

I just wanted to post a version of it only containing the right side, with Ankha. If it were permitted, would it be appropriate to mark the original as a parent? And would that be enough to constitute adding the "third_party_edit" tag? I just want to make sure it's ok to do this before I try and post the cropped version.

Thanks!

Regarding posting cropped images, it would NOT be allowed as per our Uploading Guidelines on Edits and would be considered as a "low effort edit". This would be allowed if it was cropped by the artist themselves.

Regarding labelling the original as the parent, yes. You should do that IF the crop was made by the artist.

Regarding tagging it as a third-party_edit, yes if the edit was done by someone other than the artist.

The short answer, no.

TheGreatWolfgang already gave the long version. To add to what he said, the proposed edit would count as an inferior version as well. The original is a .jpg, and those can't be resaved as a .jpg without further compression artifacting or as a .png without bloating the file size while doing nothing for the pre-existing compression artifacting.

Regardless, thanks for checking first. It saved you a headache. :)
