Topic: Did I say something wrong?

Posted under General

For context, this was my first upload onto e621 and I haven't uploaded on rule34 at all, so I wasn't aware that paysite content is commonly sourced under the free source version. (I took the rule34 upload and its source-link, after checking that it was the official artist's twitter and not sourcing the Patreon, and uploaded that version to e621)

Hi abadbird!
I'm just wondering why this post that I uploaded was tagged as commercial/paysite material when it was uploaded from the same official Twitter account as the rest of its pool.

Thank you!
ThatsGrayt

know you downloaded it from Rule34, not the artist's Twitter. Do you want to compound the lie and the record against your account? The copy on Rule34 was pirated from Patreon and is higher quality than the Twitter version. You can upload to e621 from first-party sources, which are often lower quality than pay-to-access copies.

Did I say something that provoked this reaction? I don’t know what I said wrong, and would love to know for future reference.

They get aggro because they vet 9 quintillion posts a week, driving them insane. They've replied with some variation of that message to 5,000 other users doing the same thing. it's not a big deal.

r34 has a lot of paysite content tho so be careful - check out the artist's paysite links first next time

Basically, never upload anything you downloaded from Rule34.
Always get it from the actual original source post on the publicly available page.
While you're at it, make sure that the artist will let you upload it, just in case.

Probably you would get a similar response from Rule34 admins on any similar topics, if indeed such things were caught. Some part of me doubts they can see as much as e6 admins...

Firstly, only post images you can get from the artist themselves.
You should prioritise getting artworks that are posted by the artist themselves on a primary source (i.e., one of their official galleries) that is free and publicly accessible.
You should avoid any dubious third-party sources (such as random reposts from strangers on Reddit or Twitter, and especially from Rule34) as they typically consist of lower-quality artwork (e.g., compressed "reposts of reposts") or are higher-quality but "leaked content".
You should never post from any banned third-party sources that are purposefully designed to leak commercial content, even if they are "free" or "publicly-accessible".

Secondly, make sure you are not reposting leaked or pirated commercial content.
We do not accept any artworks that are supposed to be paywalled, pay-to-view, or commercial content that got leaked by third-parties. There are exceptions if you have gotten the artist's permission to do so.
Sites like Rule34 do not have a strict uploading guidelines and people often leak pirated content there without the artist's knowledge.
Check the sources of the artworks you find and make sure that they can be taken from one of the artist's official galleries as well, that includes checking if the file sizes and dimensions match the one the artist had originally posted.

Thirdly, always source where you have gotten the image from.
This is so that the janitors can find and verify that the image posted is from a valid & reputable source.
Even if you had taken it from Rule34 (a bad source to begin with), you must also link that Rule34 page as the main source alongside any other sources mentioned on that page.

It is possible that they had interpreted your response as being a blatant lie or possibly as an attempt to justify your upload.
If you are genuinely confused, just take this as an opportunity to learn more about our Uploading Guidelines and Avoid Posting List, as to not make the same mistake again.

It is your responsibility as an uploader to properly vet your sources instead of just blindly copying whatever they're doing.
If somebody uploaded pirated art to Twitter, FurAffinity, YouTube, pixiv, anywhere, it would still be your responsibility to verify that the file's origin is legit. The site does not matter.
The version you uploaded is plainly larger than the Twitter and Bluesky sources; there are some cases where this happens because it's the artist or commissioner uploading, but all the evidence seems to say you're neither.

A deletion appeal like this will simply never succeed, and in general this is the sort of thing we'd expect from somebody appealing in bad faith if they can't/won't do the most basic fact-checking.
For instance, we regularly get people contesting "human only" deletions because they simply do not understand what we consider "human", and it would take all of like a minute for them to check our uploading guidelines instead of just messaging janitors asking "y u do this".

What Laf and 103 said, Janitor's have to cycle through similar messages daily so it's very easy to unfortunately be a message read by a Janitor whose patience is running dry for that given session.
Don't take it personally, as long as you're understanding and courteous, most people will realize that they snapped at a naïve question and will do the same.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty important learning curve that a lot of new uploaders are not ready for, so it's not uncommon for them to trip and fall on their face.
