Topic: [APPROVED] Paywall Stragglers

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #11601 is active.

create alias fvap (0) -> full_version_at_paywall (245)
create alias fvas (0) -> full_version_at_source (3)
change category full_version_at_paywall (245) -> meta
change category full_version_at_source (3) -> meta

Reason: Found these "Go there for better versions" tags and that they're missing both the acronym alias that the other types have (bvap for example) and the meta category

EDIT: The bulk update request #11601 (forum #457009) has been approved by @spe.

That type of logic could be used to invalidate an absurd amount of tags if you can just added unrelated tags together for an approximation of the same effect.

They're not unrelated. alternate_version_at_paywall and full_version_at_paywall both mean there is another version of a post here at a paysite, while preview and full_version_at_paywall indicate the version here isn't the full complete version, i.e. it's a preview of what you can find at the paysite. And we absolutely do alias away tags when something close enough to the same results can be achieved with other preexisting tags, or when the distinction is considered not worth having a separate tag. For instance, larger_version_at_source is aliased to better_version_at_source, even though "better" doesn't always mean "larger" and vice-versa (e.g. larger but with more compression artifacts, or the same size but less/no compression artifacts).

fvas/fvap also apply to animations and comics and the like, so... no?

Then better_version_at_source + preview. Separate tags allow you to dial in more specifically for how the source is different like that, rather than a nebulous "full".

No the unrelated bit is expecting people to combine bvas + cropped = fvas
That's completely foolish
We alias away tags that are literal combinations
The full version tags are clearly defined to any layperson at a glance

These seem redundant. The full_version_at_paywall wiki even notes:
While better_version_at_source + cropped works fine for full_version_at_source.

Using "alternate version + preview" as a method of conveying a complete version of something exists at the source just does not make sense at all to me. A trailer for a movie is not an alternative version of that movie, at least not in any way that feels reasonable as an English speaker. "Alterntive + preview" feels more like there is trailer variations, if you use "better +preview" instead that is easily interpreted as higher quality at source.

Full version just makes more logical sense, because it clearly states that what exists at the source/behind a paywall is a complete version of what is here. Having it reserved for designating sources/paywalls that contain complete versions makes things less ambiguous.
