Do we need the tag? As far as I can tell, it's not really referring to a species, just the people who live in a specific place. Not like we have a new_yorker tag

I'm dubious of its necessity myself, but we do have a lot of really specific fictional species tags already.

Eh, I think it's like 'pokemon'. The darkner characters have a particular aesthetic/vibe compared to the lightner characters and Undertale monsters.

Not live, but where born of. It's the same as saying everything born on New Zealand are related lol
Essentially there's no difference to your point tho

To me, it's more similar to mobian, which refers to the inhabitants of the Sonic the Hedgehog planet (ish, long story) and which has been merged into sonic_the_hedgehog_(series)

mobian has the issue of also being more or less a 1-to-1 synonym of anthro, in addition to it being a deprecated term that had only ever been used in some spin-off media.

darkner, on the other hand, seems to be a canon term with in-universe implications.

Mobian is a canon term too (or was, long story)

at most it was considered canon for a short period of time in some parts of the world, but "Mobius" and the concept of "Mobians" were never ever taken into consideration when any parts of the actual stories of any of the games were being created. and, unless the Paramount movies use the word, there are no active or recently active official continuities where the term has been used.

Do you dare deny the gospel of Sonic X?
