Topic: groping_* or *_grope? [Now with BUR!]

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

We have some redundant tags.

  • Here is a list of tags with the form *_grope.
  • Here is a list of tags with the form groping_*.

We ought to decide which form should be standard, and alias the others.

groping_*

generally has more uses, but very few tags on either list have existing aliases or implications. To make things even more confusing, pec_grope is currently aliased to pec_grab, but groping_pec is not. This raises a related debate on the difference between grope and grab.

If it matters, the related fondle set has already been standardized to the fondling_* form with the exception of self_fondle.

Personally, I am not sure which is better, other than that I think self_grope should remain as-is for consistency with self_fondle. *_grope sounds "neater" to me in some indefinable way, but groping_* is better for listing, since it groups all grope-related tags together in an alphabetical list.

The standard for grabbing is to prefer *_grab over grabbing_*. Of course, there are some tags that do not sound right if the former is prioritised, so it is kept as is (e.g., grabbing_both_legs).
On the other hand, the standard for holding is almost universally holding_* while the only exceptions for *_hold are mouth_hold and hand_holding.

So, there isn't really a universal standard for these action tags, but consideration should be taken nonetheless to follow by example.

To make things even more confusing, pec_grope is currently aliased to pec_grab, but groping_pec is not. This raises a related debate on the difference between grope and grab.

Check topic #56489 and topic #37231. No real discussion was had but it was apparently determined that the differences aren't large enough to warrant separate tags.

The difference between holding_*, *_grab, groping_*, and fondling_* is:

  • Holding refers to any form of holding of a body part or an object, different from grabbing in that it doesn't "apply too much force (not squeezing)".
  • Grabbing refers to any form of grabbing of a body part or a character.
  • Groping refers to "sexualized rubbing, feeling, or grabbing of another character's body in a sexually invasive or dominating way."
  • Fondling refers to "touching, stroking, or holding another character or itself in a loving manner or with tenderness."

If you feel a separation is warranted, you can suggest a BUR to reintroduce them.

In regards to grope vs. grab, I'd say a grab is a sudden action, while a grope is sustained contact. However, the difference is rarely apparent in still images, so I can understand why they're aliased. I do think that fondling can be visually distinct, though, so I'll introduce a BUR to unalias that one.

I'll do a BUR to alias the remaining body part gropes to grab tags and see what people think.

The bulk update request #11324 is pending approval.

create alias moob_grope (183) -> moob_grab (976)
create alias chest_grope (32) -> chest_grab (1096)
create alias boob_grope (22) -> breast_grab (44202)
create alias bulge_grope (15) -> bulge_grab (994)
create alias ball_grope (14) -> ball_grab (5488)

Reason: As suggested. There is little to no difference between a grab and a grope in still images (all the tagged images look identical to me at a glance), and this is consistent with several existing grope -> grab aliases.

self_grope, imminent_grope, and stealth_grope are excluded since they are unrelated to a specific body part.
