Reason: part 1: Madou Monogatari
so, to start, the Puyo Puyo series has a handful of different casts/universes from a couple different eras, while members of each cast continue to appear in later games and subseries, I think it would make sense to seperate each of the casts into groups, similar how we deal with pokémon generations. but I think I need to go into where these lines are drawn.
long explainer
Madou Monogatari, made by the original developer of the Puyo Puyo series, Compile, is technically the origin series to Puyo Puyo. however, Puyo took off way more than Madou and the original Compile Puyo games, feature every Madou character at some point and effectively absorbed its parent series and became the main series. it's also worth noting that the Madou Monogatari games were never officially localized, while some of the Puyo Puyo games have been. so I think it makes the most sense to treat madou_monogatari as a subseries of puyo_puyo and have the implications match this.
following Compile's bankruptcy, the Puyo Puyo series was sold to SEGA. while SEGA did also get the characters from the original games, their first original title puyo_puyo_fever (localized as "Puyo Pop Fever"), set in a new universe called "Primp", features a mostly original cast.
several years later SEGA did another soft reboot of the series in puyo_puyo_7 with another new universe, with another new cast as well as returning characters from each previous era, seven each.
the puyo_puyo_tetris crossover titles again feature a new crew of Tetris-themed characters alongside members of previous casts.
