Currently, anal and anal_penetration are home to a series of mismatched aliases that may lead to mistags on posts.

Aliased to anal:
ass_sex, butt_sex, buttsecks, buttsex

Aliased to anal_penetration:
anal_sex, ass_fuck, assfuck, butt_fuck, buttfuck

These aliased terms are functionally synonymous, yet result in different tag outputs. What would be the ideal way to shuffle these aliases around to minimize mistags? Should all of them be aliased to the root term anal, or is the intended meaning specifically penetrative anal sex? I am looking for input before creating a BUR to restructure these.

I can’t imagine any kind of "butt sex" or any variant thereof that wouldn’t be penetrative, so I’d lean towards moving all the aliases over there. I guess there’s, like, rimming, but nobody calls that butt sex.

However, even in that case, anal would also be wrong, so that’s a mistag either way. Aliasing to sex might be the only safe bet, but… no, even then I think people will try to use those tags for anal masturbation. There’s probably no real safe alias, to be honest. Still think aliasing to what they most likely meant is the best option.

I feel like the mistag chance is low enough for it to not be worth the disambiguation.

Anal_fingering and rimming can be non-penetrative forms of anal sex.

Historically, e621 has wanted to avoid making those penetrative tags, as in saying that fingering and rimming(/cunnilingus/cloacalingus) cannot ever be penetration, even though that's silly as an absolute idea and I think current staff know that. The problems were always (1) deciding how much insertion depth is enough to qualify for penetration and (2) actually judging insertion depth in any given post, so the general thinking was "just don't and say it's not penetration." Honestly, I think that thinking is so old now that I'm probably one of very few who remember it. Shallow penile penetration can be as deep as fingering or rimming or even shallower but would always be regarded as penetration because a penis is involved, and that distinction between penis and fingers and tongues doesn't make much sense.
