There is no magic number, it isn't a numbers game (intentionally so)
The staff are looking for activity; good, consistent activity
If you were dead for months or years and then become very active around the staff drive, that probably doesn't look great and I wouldn't bank on making it in this time around, maybe next time if the activity is consistent

I don't think tag edits matter. And it probably doesn't help if you weren't very active to begin with and only showing an interest when there is a staff recruitment drive.

One thing that might help your resume is if you have a high number of approved & high-quality uploads, which shows that you have a very good grasp of what can and cannot be posted.
I would imagine that in the opposite scenario with someone having a very high number of deletions and a low/negative upload limit would not even make it onto the list.

Activity is activity 🤷‍♂️ It isn't relevant activity per se, but it can still be used to show you actively use the site
When I applied for Janitor I got accepted with a few hundred uploads but damn near 100,000 post changes (I later chose to become a moderator instead, but I had passed both tests and could have gone for either)
closest archive I can find

Comparing then to now in my stats is insane. I've gained nearly 15x the favorites in the last 4 years than I did in the previous 4

I'd still imagine if the staff team are looking at the resumes for new janitors, comparing between one with high post changes and another with high post changes and approved uploads, they would lean towards the latter to fill in the limited slots.
Unless of course we are just really strapped on janitors right now to clear up the approval queue and are just tossing mops around to anybody that is just active on the site.

It's more than just tag edits and upload scores. You also need to show you work well with others and are a good fit with existing staff and the site's philosophy in general. That requires enough activity over a long enough period of time (like years) for us to get a good idea of who you are. Good examples include a positive influence on the forums and comments, a reasonable understanding of the site and what is acceptable and not acceptable on it, a willingness to take responsibility for any mistakes you make and an equal willingness to learn from them, a willingness to communicate with others and do what's good for the site despite your own feelings, and most importantly, patience. At the heart of it, it's still a job application and though it's a volunteer position with more flexibility to it than a paid job would have, you need to keep in that job hunter mindset. You're trying to sell yourself as a potential volunteer employee, and the better we understand you before the interview, the better your chances are.

OMG it's sooo difficult

I was recruited in 2022 based mostly on my forum activity (which at the time was basically limited to commenting on aliases/implications, Japanese artist names, and one thread about handling bad translations); instead of waiting for me to apply to that year's staff drive, they sought me out.
If you're a good contributor, pleasant to be around, and have one or two spheres of relative expertise, you've automatically got a better chance than the average user whose activity starts and stops with saying "hot!" on pictures of scantily-clad Renamon.

Seconding Lafcadio's answer. I was also asked to apply because I was helping out a lot (tagging/uploading/etc) and was generally polite.

There's a lot regular users can do to help around here! Add and fix tags, upload, help with the tag system via creating and voting on alias/implication/BUR requests, help folks on the discord, etc. Post approvals are fun and I'm very happy to be staff but I was having just as much fun as a regular user. So I think the best way to become staff is to not try too hard lol. We want people who genuinely enjoy helping out here and aren't just trying to grind for an application. Also be polite and nice to be around, as Lafcadio said.

If I have to add some advice to the things people have already listed above, it would be to have some sort of special skill or project that you do, which puts eyeballs on you in a positive way.
That was certainly what caught my eye when I was an admin. Though that is by no means a guarantee a position, but it can help.

Also, if you wanna be a janitor, I'll recommend studying:

The uploading guidelines
This is one of the most important things any potential janitor should know by heart.

howto:sites and sources
Familiarize yourself with the best places to source your uploads from and see what issues some sites have.

better version at source
Finding and/or replacing BVAS post is a great way to show that you have a deeper understanding of not only how to source better images, but also that you understand what is meant by "better."
If you're getting into BVAS hunting, I'd recommend asking an admin to become part of the Replacements Beta to make things easier for both yourself and the staff.

I'm sure whoever asked you doesn't regret it 😉

You must complete 1 tagging project and own 1 pair of Air Jordan's. Complete the tagging project while wearing Air Jordan's for bonus points

What if I creased them?

If you DM admins persistently they might be more willing to give you a position. Start your messages with, "I don't have a lot going on right now, I need this. Please." or "If you don't give me janitor you WILL regret it".

It's all about getting your foot in the door.

make sure you find one who likes feet, you wouldn't want us to think you're bad at researching.

Ask them about their favorite family members. It's important to get to know who you're working for/with.
