Final Fantasy 8

Final Fantasy 6 is often put up there with Final Fantasy 7, with a decent number of people saying it's actually the better one (or at least a close second).

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, with an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward expansion and the also award-winning Stormblood expansion up to level 70 for free (and if current trends continue, the also also award-winning Shadowbringers expansion up to level 80 in less than two years) with no restrictions on playtime?

Often people cite 7 or 6 as the best. Personally think 6 is, and can recommend Chrono Trigger in a similar vein.

Final Fantasy 9 is the last 'classic' version that harkens back to the first 5 or so. If you want like, that kind of fantasy experience but not to play one of the actually older ones. 10 is probably the last one that feels like the original series (1-10). 11 was an MMO, 12 & 13 had a sort of live autoplay sort of experience, 14 was an MMO and 15/16 were Kingdom Hearts-ish style action.

Several remakes of 1-4 have greatly different mechanics than the original so if you're interested in like.. the history of older video games and comparing innovations over the years and that, you might avoid some of the remakes. If you just want the story with an updated quality of life, a lot of the DS remakes are completely serviceable.

None of the games really require knowledge of the others so it doesn't matter what order you play any of them in. Jump in wherever. A few of the games have sequels (10 to 10-2 or 4 to 4 the after years) but they're very contained.

Note: Final Fantasy 7 Remake is probably better experienced *after* playing Final Fantasy 7, because the Remake seems to be both somehow super impatient to get to the best parts but also very willing to faff about and expanding content that the original didn't spend 30 hours on. And a lot of the 'we're subverting expectations' hit better if you at least have played the original.

You can probably experience it in the opposite order too, and see like "Oh this is how it originally was".

But it's not required. You'll probably be fine in either case.

Edit 2:

There's more modern remakes but honestly I've lost track sorry.

8, 9, and Tactics, dependant on what you're after. Tactics is a tactics game, so is about the furthest removed. 9 is a return to form for Final FANTASY, 8 is just plain fun so far as the sci-fi end goes, and actively discourages grinding in the same ways as most RPGs.

What elements specifically do you enjoy?

Oh good call on Tactics, I forgot about it. The story is a bit dense and political intrigue heavy compared to the more digestible form the other games are, but if you like that, it or maybe Vagrant's Story are good calls.

I've heard Tactics the most. I've also heard 16 is extremely well made, and apparently free of a few well known names that are extremely strict with their ip's.

Edit: For some reason it was really hard for me to find what I was remembering, it's Tetsuya Nomura (the creative lead of all of Kingdom Hearts) and Kazushige Nojima (scenario writer widely disliked for his writing) so it had nothing to do with ip's whoops

FFXIV is pretty nice but like any mmo, super time consuming. Finished doing my crafters from 90 to 100 and doing all the gear myself and just that took multiple hours, probably days.
the mods are top notch and it's pretty chill sometimes to just go hang around in club with other people. Raiding is also super nice but can be difficult to find actually a party that doesn't disband after someone fails mechanic one time.

Met only 3 people so far that were genuinely and objectively awful people but that's nothing when there's thousands of people you meet over the course of the game.

Ig what i'm trying to say is that it's fun as long as you either raid or do social stuff but I'd never do any grindy shit like leveling crafters more than once in this lifetime.

I'd suggest playing every FF game to date if time permits, then making that decision on your own.

Started with FF VIII ~ FF X-2 in my childhood (with FF IX having a special place in my heart Freya, my beloved) and have only recently finished playing FF I, with plans to work my way up to (the original and well-regarded) FF VII.
Can't say much about FF XI and above, but I can see that the gameplay drastically changes from their predecessors.

Thanks for the great answers!! Playing ff6 then just gonna play em all

To further this, FF6 is a great title, but if you're looking for a turn-based game with a bit more modern sensibility and overall amazing in both story and gameplay, FF10 is widely regarded as one of the best FFs. People like to point and laugh at the Tidus laugh while missing the point, though, so it sadly gets a lot of blast. :(

If I remember right, that's one of the games that Nojima ruined the legacy of with his written stories that serve as a continuation to that game specifically. I think they're known as X-1 and X-2 or something similar. Definitely avoid looking into those if you hold the characters from the game close to the chest.
