like, I get the joke. but playing on people's legitimate fears about a loss of privacy seems really not fun to me.

like, I legitimately felt a pit in my stomach when I saw that pop-up, and realizing it was a joke didn't really make it feel any better.

Ditto. Also the drawing interface sucks. I could barely draw Faloncina

I don't know why they would do something like that, it's easy to think it's real in the first few moments because of similar things happening to porn sites and they shouldn't try to make it a joke

I was confused too and then I realized what day it was.

Indeed, I can see why people might be panicked over it at first. The giveaway was wanting a drawing, but at the same time, it does seem like a poor choice of a prank considering we've been staring at a news post on the front page warning of verification bills for the past two months being a possibility.

Yep. Iโ€™m also autistic and so I tend to take things /very/ literally. April fools is like hell for me.

I assure you, this is our angst too. Some of our staff members have been significantly affected by everything going on in the USA.

I didn't fall for it, but I do wonder how many people are never coming back to e621 because they thought it was genuine and were too fearful to click the verify button and see what happened next. Pretty funny though.

Is starting April Fools jokes on March 31 just e621 tradition now? I get that there's different timezones but every logged-in user has their own timezone set (and it's not April 1 yet in either the one I have configured or the default timezone used for unregistered users)

I don't see why you'd want to inflict that feeling on others for a joke, though.

It does feels a little bit in bad taste, I definitely didn't enjoy the feeling I had for a few moments when it popped up

As soon as I realized what's happening, I ALMOST put effort into drawing a character, thinking somehow it may replace our avatar for the day -- that would've been fun.
I didn't mind the joke (as poor taste as it was), but could've at least carried it out all the way. The UwU speech gag was annoying, but definitely felt much better thought out. ๐Ÿง

When you're done drawing it will give you the option to download your drawing.

I got the pop up once, I assume accidentally since I live in the central US and itโ€™s not April 1st yet.

I thought it was funny though it didnโ€™t work too well on my mobile phone, kept moving around the window.

yeah, it was an instant "welp, there goes another community I liked being a part of." feeling.

I already haven't been in a great spirits for the past 6-7 days, so maybe I'm just abnormally jaded right now but, I dunno... now that feeling's just going to be another thing rolling around in my head.

So you're telling me not only did I have my "session" ruined but the 8 minutes of effort I put into drawing an awful rendition of my fursona's as a loaf... was all for an April Fools joke?

Not funny

any chance the "image quality" and "artistic worth" requirements could be waived for submissions drawn in the ID Verification so even those of us who aren't artists could use them as our avatars?

Before I realized it was a joke (hard to do considering it's March 31st...) I actually thought the law had passed but been written so shittily that the legal team decided a crappy mouse sketch of your fursona was sufficient to fulfill the letter of the law. That honestly wouldn't surprise me.

Is scaring people on april fools not a thing anymore? I remember in my childhood one local newspaper had an article about meteors hitting the neighborhood including a staged picture where they put a huge ass rock inside a wrecked car and only cleared it up in the following issue the next day.

I had to double take, too but come now. The joke should be obvious after two seconds.

Thankfully I HAVE a sona (and actually put in some effort drawing him on that MS Paint interface)

But this joke still sucks. Especially in the wake of last month's scare with the bill (Is it still pending or did it die out?)

I get the feeling the staff are going to be looking at submissions and having a field day with some of them. I certainly can't draw whatsoever but still tried to make something for the "verification".

We don't save them anywhere

The ONLY issue I had with the drawing thing was...no grey. My fursona has grey horns. *shrugs*

Still can't wait to see what everyone drew.

Oh, I assumed staff would gather "highlights" and make a post showcasing them at some point but I stand corrected.

Yeah this was really lame.
But at least I got to draw a dickbutt.

I feel like it's a little different because we haven't been worried about meteors touching down and destroying shit for the past month/year/longer, like we have been with age verification.

also, I just think being mean sucks.

I didn't think this was mean-spirited at all. I was amused and pleasantly surprised to be greeted by it, and I thought that it was a creative way to give levity to the real problem the site faces. Like how pirates in the 18th century would hold mock trials for other crew members and pretend to sentence them to death as a way to laugh at the actual threat of death that they faced.

So, it doesnt get shown anywhere and is just a single popup at the first login? Pretty lame.

My bigger issue now is just having to skip through the torrent of badly drawn images clogging up the first few pages of submissions....

At first, I thought this was a new type of captcha where it tells you to draw something, and then uses AI to check if you've drawn the right thing.

edit:
All of your drawings are better than mine!
But I'm uploading it anyway.

Bet it did a better job of making people more aware of an issue that might end up being nationwide in the US than the news posts that everyone ignores.

Already 140 184 263 398 544 1121 posts with furid_(e621)... I wonder if staff are regretting it yet.

I wonder how many will actually survive quality control. Some of them are borderline passable.

On second though I find it quite funny.

Gallows humor bringing attention to a real political issue impacting the site is a win. I get why it might be poorly received by some, but yeah.

I thought my state had finally gotten to e6, but upon closer inspection it was a joke and I had a little fun drawing even though I don't got a fursona.
Unless I've just been tricked into finally becoming a real furry by drawing a sleepy penguin.

It takes literally two seconds of reading to see "fursona" in bold. If that.
It is so transparently a joke that it gives up the goose on literally the second sentence (third if you count the header)

I don't know how y'all survive in the wild.

April Fools is just assholes hiding behind "tradition" to act foul. Well I for one will not respect tradition and call you out of being Especially vile with this one.

God why does this day turn people into such a problem for everyone around them?

Also they have never been funny and never will be.

how is disliking April Fools' Day pranks a lack of self awareness?

Honestly, what shocked me more than the prank was seeing "AFD" in the thread title.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was wondering what a Alternative fรผr Deutschland prank would be for a minute.

Considering how small the file size is, I wonder why this isn't a standard feature. I remember old forums letting you do this for a custom avatar. Though I imagine the shit post quality would get on everyone's nerves.

cause if it wouldnt be approved for posting on e6 why it would it be okay to put it as a pfp,

Hold on, people actually take it this seriously and getting mad over it? A little joke? A one time in a year thing? How do you even handle going outside

Yeah. My first thought really was "What the hell is this doing here?" and only after like a minute I realised what it actually meant.

They wouldn't be blacklistable or easily moderatable like posts are

i mean they were talking about generally too, in which assholes will lie and say "your grandma just died" and then say "april fools" beside this e6 april fools joke is pretty mean spirited i genuinely thought there was id verification so I switched over to a different country and still saw and then I realized

kaasje said:

when I go outside, I generally try to avoid people who think they can just be mean as a joke.

funkwolfie said:

by the way if there was age verification in the state that e6 is in there's nothing you could do to avoid it, the site would be forced to do it or move out of state.

kaasje said:

I handle it fairly normally. But my tolerance for people behaving like assholes does not magically get better just because it is a certain day of the year.

Also going outside does not usually result in people accosting me to be an asshole so I fail to see how this is even related to that.

We consider a bunch of people trying art out a massive win!

I don't draw, so I wrote out a link to a not-Rick Roll video instead for the staff to enjoy. I wanted to send a Drake and Josh clip of them singing, "nooooo" in harmony, but found something else instead.

It would've been funny if it was framed differently maybe, but it's in pretty poor taste with everyone's genuine concerns about privacy and crackdowns on sites with adult content. A fursona oekaki would be neat even if it was done in a joking fashion, but not really like this.

funkwolfie said:

well there are plenty of reaction images, and many that aren't furry. So if those are commonplace as avatars, why couldn't we have the option to make a small one without having to throw it into the post section. It could still be flagged and taken down, records handed out accordingly for trolls. Upvoted if they are nice, and become posts if they are good. I understand your frustration with the low quality but the tools to make it were never intended to produce a nice looking picture. Ergo it's actually kind of funny how many people made semi decent art from the joke, and people like me who want to feel like an individual. It's not pretty but it's just meant to be a silly doodle.
