Topic: What counts as topwear?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I'm currently going through the shirtless tag to see where it's mistagged for characters who are actually topless. However, I am uncertain about some posts where characters are shirtless, but wearing neckwear such as scarfs or neckties. shirtless is officially defined as characters who are wearing topwear but no shirt; these clothing items are not officially designated topwear, but I'm not sure whether or not they should count for this purpose.

Is there an official stance on this?

Nope. Doesn't even imply clothed (like topless), have aliases, or have implications to it, so it hasn't really been scrutinised that heavily either

Related question: does underwear_only supercede other clothed tags, or can we tag it in conjunction with pantsless and topless/shirtless?

underwear only does directly not imply topless because bras are considered underwear (I have many a bone to pick with that, but I digress)
a character wearing only underwear (that is not a bra) would be topless, see: boxers only, shorts only, diaper only, etc

if underwear only applies pantsless cannot apply due to it both requiring some kind of bottomwear and "normal" topwear (notice the note on the wiki that it's different from bottomless)

I've got a question about that, actually. If the character is wearing a bikini top but has it pushed down to expose her nipples: is it still topwear?

If you have a shirt on the ground the shirt is still topwear.

The problem is bikini top doesn't imply topwear

Does bondage gear such as ropes, harnesses, etc. make a character shirtless instead of topless?

Bumping because I've run into this again and I'd like an answer.

This posts depicts a character bound with what appears to be a shirt or jacket. Should she be tagged as nude or mostly_nude?

My impression would be nude. The shirt/jacket isn't being used as clothing in this application, if that was a rope or length of cellophane wrap it would be in essence identical.

That would be my impression too, but the wiki for nude says this:

A character is allowed to wear the following items and still be considered nude:

  • Most forms of restraints, and bondage gear, except for suits and other covering gear that resemble normal clothing.

Does this refer only to things like harnesses that are worn like normal clothing, or does it apply to clothing used as restraints?

The mostly_nude page also features this image as an example:

even though the character is only wearing an accessory and restraints, which should make her nude by that page's definition.

It says "covering gear which resemble clothing", which I take to mean stuff like full body harnesses. BDSM gear that may not otherwise be considered clothing, but looks and functions like clothing when worn. Not clothing that's used for bondage, which is the other way around.

She's wearing a cape, which is considered clothing as it'd made to cover the back and shoulders (but leaves everything else, including her breasts and pussy, fully exposed, making it mostly_nude when it's the only clothing being worn).
