Topic: [APPROVED] Tag implication: diamondback_rattlesnake -> rattlesnake

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Technically there is no such species as a "diamondback rattlesnake" - there are at least four different species that go by that name, but they are at least all related (though no more than other rattlesnake species), so an umbrella tag for the group seems acceptable.

Okay, on second thought…

  • western_diamondback_rattlesnake is the only species currently tagged
  • two of the species listed on Wikipedia don’t have "diamondback" in their common name, even though they do have a diamondback pattern
  • they’re not necessarily more closely related to each other than they are to other rattlesnake species, they just happen to have the diamond pattern in common while the others do not

So with that in mind, would it make more sense to…

1. Imply these four species to diamondback_rattlesnake regardless of their name?

2. Only imply the two that have "diamondback" in their name (which would be the eastern diamondback rattlesnake and the western diamondback rattlesnake)?

3. Just alias this tag to something else instead?

  • 3.1 - alias to rattlesnake
  • 3.2 - alias to western_diamondback_rattlesnake since that seems to be overwhelmingly the most popular type and most likely what was meant by the tagger
  • 3.3 - alias to a disambiguation, make the tagger pick one of the proper species

Kind of like an opossum situation? You have a good point. It's a good thing someone was paying attention.

In light of that, I'm leaning towards 3.2 with 2 followed by 3.3 as alternatives.

create alias diamondback_rattlesnake (16) -> western_diamondback_rattlesnake (93)
create implication western_diamondback_rattlesnake (93) -> rattlesnake (1404)
create implication eastern_diamondback_rattlesnake (0) -> rattlesnake (1404)

Reason:

alright, let’s put it to a vote. alias the tag to western_diamondback_rattlesnake because this seems to be the most likely intended target (of the various diamondback species, this seems to be the one with the widest range and the most culturally recognized species), then imply rattlesnake. throwing in an implication for the currently empty eastern_diamondback_rattlesnake, because it could get used eventually.
