Edit: And now that I think about it, shouldn't oviposition implicate egg?

I think it's possible for the determination of the act of oviposition to be made without an egg being visible, so I don't think an implication of oviposition -> egg would be wise.

Agreed with the original alias proposal.

The edit not so much, because like Corgi_bread said, there's not always a visible egg. In many oviposition pictures I've seen, there's often implied bulges which based on context are probably eggs of some kind. Like bulges spaced in a tentacle, or round lumpy abdominal bulges that look like they could be eggs. When the eggs are implied and not explicit, the "egg" tag probably doesn't fit, so it's probably better left unimplicated.

I honestly thought that laying_eggs was laying eggs and oviposition was being implanted with eggs. If this is the case we really should unalias laying_eggs (if it's aliased to oviposition) and make these two separate

laying_eggs->egg_laying
oviposition alone

Oviposition means laying eggs. It's right there in the dictionary. If you want a special tag for insect/alien implantation, you'll need to come up with a different tag.

oviposition implies laying eggs but not vice versa.

Oviposition means to literally "place" the eggs. Usually using a specialized organ or appendage called an ovipositor.
A chicken laying eggs is not oviposition. A fish or insect laying eggs is.

Some definitions do mention that "oviposition is the laying of eggs, especially by use of an ovipositor" But others dont.
For our purposes in particular it would be beneficial to maintain a slight distinction between the two.

[edit]or perhaps I'm wrong. Scientific papers do seem to use the term in regards to birds.

Oviposition is the process of laying eggs by oviparous animals. Chickens included.

And as far as I know, that's how the term is used in furdom too. I remember the oviposition mailing list, back in ~1994; it was mostly reptiles and avians.

Having to search multiple tags for the same thing is freaking annoying, particularly when the tags in question don't make it clear which one is more broad. The vast majority of people don't know what the fuck an ovipositor is nor have they ever heard of one, and probably have seen the term 'oviposition' and are using it without even breaking down the word, because that's "the word" used to search for this stuff, as it's not a common kink.

If you're going to make a subtag for something like "laying eggs into someone/something" or "laying eggs speficially with an appendage" or whatever, it needs to be a tag that actually includes some clue in the tag itself as to that. Google "define oviposition" and Google's inset as well as the top three dictionary entries all indicate it's not restricted to an ovipositor, no matter how the word is used in the actual entymological field.
