Topic: What happened to Shen Hokori?

Posted under General

A couple of days ago every post under the artist shen_hokori got deleted with the reason "Does not meet minimum quality standards (Artistic, Generator edit)".
I'm just curious why they were deleted. That deletion reason leaves a lot be desired in terms of clarity. Does "generator edit" mean AI generated? If so, perhaps I'm the fool here, but I'm pretty sure that's just wrong.

Checked comments, and yes seemed to be ai related.

They did seem a bit off
I never had the guts to pull the trigger though

Pretty blatant traces. Their anatomy is off any time they can't copy the gen 1:1, their coloring isn't consistent (shading in the wrong places, randomly swapping between backgrounds that are more blurry or less blurry), and when they do stream their process they conveniently start with a fully complete sketch layer.

And just like that, most of Shen Hokori's artwork got restored.
Which seems like an odd decision, considering that the streams - as Lafcadio mentioned - aren't really suitable as proof.

Most baffling is the tempo at which the artist can "draw". Starting at December 25 where he(?) made his first public appearance and uploaded his commission sheet, he published ~2000 Commissions and Posts on twitter. Even if we take a careful estimate and consider only half of these, we end up with the fact that he creates more than 10 Images a day, each day.
Which becomes also apparent when checking the dates on his twitter posts.

These aren't just basic sketches, they are fully shaded and colored works - some even with an elaborate background.
I am not an artist, and while i can't judge how long the individual steps of drawing an image takes, it does seem extreme.

Still, the artworks themselves feature inconsistency regarding anatomical correctness:

A missing leg, missing and broken hands, disjointed leg (or additional buttcheek)

Or surprising differences in design:

Like always, none of this "proves" anything. However i'd like to see why the posts have been restored (or deleted in the first place)..

yeah, almost none of this artist's work looks like it was drawn by the same person.

Alright, so the reason I restored Shen Hokori's artwork is because the artist provided fairly substantial proof (in the form of timelapse recordings of the drawing process) for a few of their posts that basically rule out any AI assistance beyond maybe reference material. At least for the few posts that such proof was provided, I can say I'm pretty confident that they are not AI generated or AI assisted in any way. The artist's style really just looks like AI but isn't.

That said, just because a few posts from the artist are definitely not AI assisted doesn't necessarily mean that none of them are AI assisted. We had previously blanket-deleted all of the artist's work under reasonable suspicion of AI usage, which we usually do when the work seems too suspicious and there's insufficient evidence in favor of no AI usage. Usually in cases like this we never receive a valid challenge from the artist, but in this case we did, so we decided to take the opposite approach and restore their artwork as the artist definitely makes at least some real artwork and has the skills to make artwork that looks just like this, meaning that most or all of their artwork being genuine was more likely than it all being AI.

That said, while we may handle some AI cases on an artist-by-artist basis (simply because most people who generate AI images and try to pass them off as their own artwork do so for all of their posts), there are some cases that should be handled on a post-by-post basis. This may be one of those cases. So now if there are any posts by this artist that seem particularly suspicious, I would encourage you to flag the post and explain the issues in the flag notes field so that we can review them. Individual posts by this artist may still be deleted under suspicion of AI (and we might contact the artist again for proof of authenticity in such cases too), but our stance currently is that this artist is probably genuine more often than not, so we'll err on the side of keeping their artwork unless a given post has a greater-than-usual suspicion of AI usage and the artist isn't able to provide sufficient evidence of validity.
