when should I make a pool for a bunch of connected drawings, instead of having them all parented to the 1st page?

honestly, if it's more than a series of just 2 posts it should be pooled.

Basing this on the help section
Pools generally have a shared and pre-established theme. Think comics and other sequential posts, or other things like multi-artist projects like the My Little Pony Ponut Packs (Not on e6 to my knowledge)
As dba said, general rule of thumb is more than 2 posts. If it's just 2, parent/child is better.

Pools are not to be confused with sets , which are personal collections. Like this set where I save my place in comics that I'm reading.

Also, if a post in a pool has alternate versions (slight variations, clothing change, sketch vs final, textless, etc), just put the original in the pool and set that as the alternate's parent.
Don't "daisy chain" posts through parent/child relationships, since that's what pools are for.
