Topic: Which takes precedence: artist or character tags?

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Artists and their murrsonas often have the same names.
=> People keep changing the tag type from artist: to character: and vice versa.

What is the right way to resolve this naming conflict?
a) artist:murrfox + character:murrfox_(character)
or
b) artist:murrfox_(artist) + character:murrfox

I've always gone by whichever currently has the most submissions to the site. I think in MOST cases, murrfox would get the artist tag and murrfox_(character) would get the character tag, since it's very likely that there's going to be more art produced BY murrfox than artwork OF murrfox.

Obviously this is not true of all artists, but my opinion is that the simplest form of the tag needs to be the one that's the most popular on the site, as determined by its current post count.

I've always done artist over character because that's what I usually see.

I would probably let the artist name stay the same and add the _(character) to the fursona. My reasoning would be that the artist is the actual owner of that name, and that the character is named after them and therefore needs the distinction. Sort of like when a father and son get named the same name, you call the father by name and the son gets saddled with "jr." after it. Either way it helps if the wiki pages get updated to list the other related tag so that people can easily find and use the correct tag for either purpose. It's just another way to help keep people working from the same page.
