Topic: Tag Alias: swimming_pool -> pool

I think possibly the other way around, actually.

"Pool" is also (depending on region) a common name for "that game that you play with cue sticks on the big green table with the holes in it" (i.e., pocket billiards, or sometimes just billiards). While there's not much we can do either way to prevent mistagging it (short of using _(disambiguation)), I don't think it's really a huge issue; doing it the other way around could help reinforce it's usage though, which could be desirable.

I see a few pool tables in pool -swimming_pool -swimming -water -swimsuit -outside that should probably be moved either way.

Can't bother to start a new thread, even though this originally had nothing to do with billiards, and just throwing stuff out (mostly without much thought, so...):

Any beach_ball confusion?
Alias pool_ball (9) -> billiard_ball (3)
Alias pool_balls (1) -> billiard_ball (3)

Imply billiard_ball -> billiards (maybe not?)
Imply pool_ball (9) -> ball

8 ball may imply the game and not the ball?
Imply/Alias 8-ball (3) -> billiard_ball
Imply/Alias 8_ball (10) -> billiard_ball
Imply/Alias eight_ball (2) -> billiard_ball

Alias billiards_table (1) -> billiard_table (1)
Alias pool_table (81) -> billiard_table (1)
Alias pooltable (1) -> billiard_table (1)

Imply billiard_table -> billiards

Alias pool_cue (16) -> billiard_cue
Alias cue_stick (3) -> billiard_cue
Alias cue (3) -> billiard_cue

Imply billiard_cue -> billiards (maybe not?)

There's also 1 billards

Just a quick skimming of the tags, take it or leave it.

I think it's a solid plan; I'll finish this up tonight after I make dinner. :)

Hrm.
Billiards and pool are two different games. Both are cue games, but billards tables usually lack pockets, while pool tables are smaller and have pockets.

So I don't think that pool_table should be aliased to billiard_table.

Here's a comparison: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/what-is-the-difference-between-pool-and-billiards.html

The balls are also different.
Snooker has 22 balls (15 of them red), billiards has 3 solids (white, red, and yellow), and pool is the one with 1 to 15 numbered balls.

As said, didn't put much thought into my list... Thought billiards was the umbrella term for them all.

But do we need to differentiate between carom, pool, English billiards and snooker? And each of these I believe have subcategories. Not saying we shouldn't but not sure people would know or want the differences, and there's not really that much of them combined either. But I'm not against being specific, usually the opposite. Either way I think we need an umbrella term catching them all, so.... cue_sports and similar? Or do we want to deal with carom_billiards_table, pool_table, snooker_table, and english_billiards_table, etc. on their own?

We're really just trying to differentiate between swimming pools and the game. Billiards is a informal name for both pocket billiards/pool, and cue sports in general (whether it's technically correct or not) and some of what we see will be both ambiguous and most likely to be pool billiards anyways (which game are these? post #365275 post #490415 post #584034).

Thoughts:

  • cue_sports would be technically correct, but do we really care at this point?
  • I'm less sure about pool_table vs. billiard_table. On only hand it's nice to differentiate slightly more between the ambiguous word "pool" and the actual game, on the other hand they aren't actually the same. Either way I don't think that having both tags (i.e., not aliasing them together) is really benefiting us.
  • I suppose we can be more specific (e.g., carom_billiards_table), but I doubt we have enough images (if any) to even tag this. Either way I think we should imply a blanket tag (billiards/cue_sports) for simplicity.
