Topic: Can't use Proton Mail aliases on e6 account

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Hi. I recently switched to Proton Mail for their alias feature which lets me have several email addresses which get redirected to my main, private one. The email format is "[email protected]".

When trying to set it as my new email since I won't be using my old one, it gives me this error.

"Email address may not be used."

Are there any workarounds? Will I be forced to make a throwaway Gmail account just for e6? Is there any way I can unlink my email from my account? I don't particularly need messages sent to me for a service like this.. :/

The email for accounts on here is mostly used for if you request a password reset or otherwise need to recover your account.

We don't send out any newsletter or anything like that. So if you worry about spam, there's no need.

But if you don't use a working email for it, then we might have no way to help you recover your account if something ever happens. If I remember correctly, you also need to keep an email listed in your settings, or else you won't be able to save or change any settings (including your blacklist, comment view threshold, etc). So it's better to have it than to not.

I am worried about security. I don't want my real email address for sale if this place get compromised in some way. This site may not send spam but the bad guys will do, and changing to another alias here and disabling the old one will be easier than changing my whole email account. Proton email proxies send all the messages to our main mailbox, so is transparent for Proton users.

If you think your email address isn't already for sale somewhere you're more naive than you are paranoid

Or you could just make a burner email address (e.g., on Gmail) and have that be linked to your current e6 account?
I don't get why people would be paranoid to have their personal/private email addresses leaked when they could have just created separate ones for public use.

If you want everything to be in one place, you can always auto-forward messages to your main email.

It isn't rude, it's just the truth
If you've signed up for more than a handfull of services or even had your email for more than a few years it has been sold somewhere, and worrying about using an email for a site, a data breach happening at some arbitrary point, and then that email getting sold is really paranoid

calling someone naive and paranoid is name calling

Calling someone an asshole or a deuchebag is name calling, describing someone naive for showing naivete or paranoid for showing paranoia, isn't name calling. Maybe rude (though I wouldn't say it is in this case), but it's not name calling when it's a proper description.
