Topic: [Request] FAQ for frequent simple tagging concerns/questions

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Obviously I'm aware that tagging-related questions have their own section in the forums and even in the official e621 discord, but I think it'd be nice to have a stickied thread in the Tag Projects/Questions forum that just listed a bunch of frequently asked questions and their answers.

Some possible questions and answers to include:

  • (top of the page should be a link to the Help Index and the FAQ )
  • topic #45747 : do musical artists/songs get tagged? What if it's a music video for said song?
  • Can I tag the commissioner of a piece?
  • Do voice actors/video editors/3d model artists/writers/other non-visual contributors get tagged? (there's still some discussion on 3d modellers that has yet to resolve, but the current stance seems to be 'no' on all of these) Now we have the contributor tag type, hooray! Only for 3D modelers and voice actors currently, though.
  • How do I tag this character's gender? (https://e621.net/wiki_pages/3294)
  • I've changed my artist/character's name but I don't want to manually update every post. How can I do this automatically? (alias/BUR)
  • How do I make a BUR? How do I post a BUR into a specific topic?
  • Why don't hybrid species (folf, wusky, sharkyeen, etc) get tagged?
  • Why is (character) not implied to (species)?
  • Do I tag (*_position tag) if the characters aren't having sex or if they're after_sex? (stand_and_carry_position for instance)

These are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's more that can be added as frequently-asked questions get posted to the forums. It's nice to have this information somewhere, rather than having to search the forums for a question that has been asked once or twice before.

Updated

Bumping my own request, I think an FAQ would save people a lot of time having to answer questions in this forum.

Generally no, we don't tag individual music artists nor the name of the songs.
However, I wouldn't be opposed to tagging a copyright tag for music/sound effects from popular games since they are not restricted by TWYS (e.g., hearing the Pokemon theme song).

  • Can I tag the commissioner of a piece?

No, commissioner tags are frequently invalidated if found.

  • Do voice actors/video editors/3d model artists/writers/other non-visual contributors get tagged? (there's still some discussion on 3d modellers that has yet to resolve, but the current stance seems to be 'no' on all of these) Now we have the contributor tag type, hooray! Contributors are still a relatively new tag category. If there are any questions or discussions to include certain contributors, they may bring it up on topic #54179.

Answered.

  • I've changed my artist/character's name but I don't want to manually update every post. How can I do this automatically? (alias/BUR)
  • How do I make a BUR? How do I post a BUR into a specific topic?

This information should have been made more apparent on the individual request alias/implication/BUR pages, but certain unspoken rules (e.g., don't alias common/general to specific tags, don't alias unused/barely-used tags when it could be manually fixed) are not mentioned anywhere at all.

  • Why don't hybrid species (folf, wusky, sharkyeen, etc) get tagged?

It becomes untenable to maintain individual hybrid tags for every known combination out there, so it would be better to just tag the individual species and hybrid.

  • Why is (character) not implied to (species)?

We don't in principle because alternate_species, crossgender (in the case of implying genders), and cosplay exists.

  • Do I tag (*_position tag) if the characters aren't having sex or if they're after_sex? (stand_and_carry_position for instance)

The argument is no since they are "sex positions" and you can't be in a sex position if sex is not actively happening, though I have always argued otherwise.
There are provisions for different tags to be used (e.g., spooning vs. spoon_position), but they do not exist for every position.
