I sort of don’t like having to append (species) to this - apparently springtail is currently in use for an obscure Tom and Jerry character, but that should probably be suffixed anyway.

Late but I definitely think that should be the case, imo except for super specific cases (such as species names being inspired by fiction, like the real pterosaur named after Aerodactyl), real-life species should take priority over characters regardless of how well-known either are (especially if they're unrelated beyond having the same name). I just didn't know if regular users have permission to switch tags manually in these sorts of cases by retagging every image (which would be do-able since both tags are pretty small)

In this case I think aliasing springtail_(species) to just springtail would be perfectly acceptable. Even if it's deemed for some reason the suffix is worth it, I still think it should be aliased to something else than species, since that suffix is just straight up false - a springtail is as much of a species as "insect" is. springtail_(arthropod) would be more true.
