A "cut throat" is also referring to someone who's excessively aggressive, or a type of bandit. Although current uses do seem to all reference a slit throat, so perhaps an alias is okay.
Yeah, it's not so clear to indicate a ratehr vague cutthroat type of person in a picture, so no much such use.
Not exactly sure, what it really indicates, but I made three Google searches:
cutthroat 27.2M hits
cuthroat 27.2M hits
"cut throat" 5.6M hits (although this apparently even just turned up with "cut-throat" hits mostly)
Aliasing currently "cut throat" to "slit throat" will help people get more used to using the less ambiguousish "slit throat", and if needed, we can have "cutthroat" as a tag for shady characters.
I don't think that cutthroat should be tagged for anything other than a slit throat. A murderer who literally cuts the throats of his victims would be tagged with the effects of what he's doing – slit_throat, knife or other cutting device, blood, death or imminent_death – maybe assassin but not murderer even though that's what he is. Cutthroat in the sense of a person who is a cruel, unprincipled person is a TWYK thing. And cutthroat) in pool would be tagged with billiards. Any other cutthroat will have an identifier of some sort.
Aliasing cut_throat to slit_throat shouldn't cause any problems unless someone is especially fumble-fingered when trying to type out a cutthroat_* tag.

I never once saw anyone and any media mention "cut throat" in that sense. I agree with aliasing.
