Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: japanese_tally_marks -> chinese_tally_marks

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #59435 japanese_tally_marks -> chinese_tally_marks has been rejected.

Reason: Several East Asian cultures use what is tagged as "japanese_tally_mark," including China and Korea. They apparently originated from China (I am no expert), so it seems more accurate to call them "chinese_tally_marks", though perhaps "east_asian_tally_marks" would be more generic?

... Is Western tally marks vs. East Asian ones really a tag-worthy difference? If we're keeping it, I have no strong opinions on what to call it, but it should imply tally_marks.

I think east_asian_tally_marks sound better since it is used in other East Asian cultures as well.

The classic 5-stroke "Western" tally marks appear as ||||, while their East Asian counterparts appear as 正.
I believe it is tag worthy when used in searching from user description (i.e., topic #23835).

This sounds similar to this thread though obviously they're not the same things.

I'm pretty uniformed about this stuff, so that was an interesting thread to read!
I do still think japanese_tally_marks is explicitly erroneous by naming a specific country (that also isn't even the origin of the symbol). I learned what the symbol was through e621 and thought the symbol was exclusive to/originated from Japan.

Calling them "Chinese" may be more correct than "Japanese", but I now think east_asian_tally_marks or maybe even cjk_tally_marks seem better for clarity.
